Understanding Early Childhood Development (ECD) can make a significant impact on how you relate to children. Each child is unique and may meet developmental milestones a little earlier or later than his peers. Children learn skills called developmental milestones during predictable periods. Milestones develop sequentially, meaning that a child will need to develop some skills before developing other skills. Thus, the early pre-school years are very critical in a child's life and development. Early experiences can influence brain development, establishing the neural connections that provide the foundation for language, reasoning, problem-solving, social skills, behaviour and emotional health.
It is of utmost importance that we prepare and develop our children's potential and ability to learn in this development phase. To optimise quality in early childhood development, you should understand the history and development of the Early Childhood Sector and some fundamental principles about the modern approach to enabling equitable access and opportunities for all children.
